Overview

The Google Grant Program was created in April 2003 to facilitate the provision of in-kind ad campaigns for Not-For-Profit organizations via Google Ads text ads (Paid Search). While the program requirements have evolved since its inception, it remains a valuable means through which Not-For-Profit organizations are able to reach and engage donors to support mission-driven causes.

Qualifying Not-For-Profit organizations are able to receive up to $10,000 USD of advertising budget every month for Google Ads (text ads) utilization.

14 Rules for Google Grant

01

Registered NFP/ charity

  • Canadian organizations must be currently registered with TechSoup Canada, TechSoup Global regional arm
  • Organizations must be Canadian charities registerd with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Canadian Federal Non-profits registered with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), or Canadian Provincial Non- profits registered with their corresponding provinces or territories
  • The organizations must have an existing website with a registration number referenced on home page or about-us page

Brand Communications

  • Ads will only appear on Google search result pages
  • Google Search Partners and display network are not available to be targeted

Text ads only

  • Google text ads on the Search Network show above and below Google search results. It has three parts: headline text, a display URL, and description text

Monthly optimization (ex. bids, keywords, copy, links, landing pages…)

  • Checking in and Optimization

Minimum Click-Through-Rate (CTR) of 5% (cannot miss 2 months in a row)

  • All Ad Grants AdWords accounts must maintain a 5% click-through rate (CTR) each month (at the account level, not necessarily each keyword)
  • If the CTR requirement is not met for 2 consecutive months, the account will be deactivated

No Conquesting (competitor’s branded terms)

  • Eligible not-for-profit organizations are only allowed to promote through their branded keywords or generic keywords
  • It is no longer allowed to target competing brands or non-relevant keywords

No single keyword (too general/broad)

  • Single-word keywords that are too broad to reflect the mission of non-profits are restricted
  • Exceptions are sometimes allowed in cases of owned brand terms, medical conditions, basic keywords relating directly to supporting a charity, or due to the sensitive nature of the causes the charity supports
  • Other exceptions are possible to be exempt from the single-word keyword restriction

Choice between a Cost-Per-Click (CPC) cap $2 (limits unrelated terms) or a conversion-based bidding strategy like Maximize Conversions, Target CPA, or Target Return on Advertising Spend (ROAS)

  • Examples of conversion goals include donations, purchases, ticket sales, membership fees, email sign-ups, volunteer sign-ups, new membership form completions, information request submissions, calls to your organization, or time spent reading content on your website
  • If your Ad Grants account was created post January 1, 2018, conversion tracking is the only option. Conversion tracking reflects your website goals, which vary by organization

The minimum Quality Score of 3 (level of relevancy)

  • ‘Quality Score’ is Google’s rating of the quality and relevance of both keywords and PPC ads. It is used to determine CPC and multiplied by your maximum bid to determine the ad rank in the ad auction process
  • The Quality Score of all keywords must maintain a 3 or above on a scale of 10
  • Keywords that fail to maintain a Quality Score of 3 or above must be removed or paused

Minimum 2 active ad groups with 2 active text ads

  • Each campaign must have at least 2 active ad groups
  • Each ad group must contain a set of closely related keywords and 2 active text ads

Minimum 2 site links in the account (shown in some ads)

  • Site links will show in a variety of ways depending on the device, position, and other factors. When your site link extension appears with one of your ads on a computer, it shows 2 to 6 links, which may appear on the same line or fill up to two lines of your ad
  • Google Grant requires at least 2 site links to be added and applied to each campaign

Complete surveys to share impact data (with Google)

  • The survey will be sent to the admin email addresses in your account. Email notifications must be turned on in Google Ads
  • If the account is suspended for a missed deadline, completing the survey will trigger a reinstatement process

Specific Geo-Targeting

  • Ad Grant accounts must have geo-targeting to show ads in relevant locations

Web standards (quality website, non-suspicious, not commercial)

  • Your ads may only point to the domain approved during your application process, and domains added via the additional domain request form
  • Your organization must own the domain linked to your ad
  • Your website must be functional and of high-quality
  • Your website cannot be dedicated to commercial activity
